The questions we hear most often from brokers, risk managers, and prospective clients.
Canterbury Insurance DAC is a designated activity company incorporated in Ireland (CRO 248217) and based at the Harcourt Centre in Dublin 2. We are a specialist commercial insurance carrier writing four EU non-life classes: commercial property cover (Classes 8 and 9), general liability (Class 13), and miscellaneous financial loss (Class 16).
We are authorised across four EU non-life classes under Annex I of the Solvency II Directive: Class 8 (Fire and Natural Forces), Class 9 (Other Damage to Property), Class 13 (General Liability), and Class 16 (Miscellaneous Financial Loss). We do not write motor, marine, aviation, life, health, credit, or suretyship business. Our focus is deliberately narrow.
Canterbury distributes exclusively through licensed insurance brokers. We believe broker advice is integral to commercial insurance buying, and we do not operate a direct-to-business sales channel. If you are a business seeking cover, please speak to your insurance broker, who can approach us on your behalf.
Yes. As a Dublin-authorised insurer we can write business across the European Union under freedom of services and freedom of establishment provisions. We work with brokers based in multiple EU jurisdictions, and a single Canterbury policy can respond to risks located in any EU Member State subject to the specific authorisation and notification requirements applicable to each line.
Brokers can submit risks by emailing our underwriting team directly. Please include the policyholder name, occupation/activity, sums insured or limits required, location(s) of risk, claims history, and a clear indication of cover sought. We aim to acknowledge submissions within one business day and to revert with an indication or a declinature as quickly as the risk allows.
We focus on mid-market commercial risks across our four authorised classes. We have particular appetite for risks where there is clear engagement with risk management, good claims history, and a strong broker relationship. We are happy to discuss our specific appetite by industry sector — please contact us directly.
Claims notifications should be sent to claims@canterburyinsurance.ie or by phone to +353 1 234 5521 during business hours. Full details of what to include in a notification are on our Claims page. We acknowledge every notification within one business day.
